The gang was initially formed to protect African-American inmates from the threat posed by Netas and Latin Kings gangs who dominated the prison. The 415 Kumi and BGF have had numerous conflicts but have also worked together depending on the prison environment. 415 Kumi Nation only recruited black inmates from California's Bay Area, but now recruits from Black gangs all over California. There are documented KUMI members in every Prison within California. They began using the Swahili word "KUMI" (Koo-me) meaning "10" (the sum of 415 is 10.)
